Szuper Gallery in collaboration with the Postgraduate Program in Curating, Zurich University for the Arts
Curatorial Vaudeville came about in 2008 as the result of collaboration between Szuper Gallery (Susanne Clausen and Pavlo Kerestey) and the Postgraduate Program in Curating from the Zurich Fine Arts Academy. As part of an experimental workshop developed by Szuper Gallery, 10 curators each staged a curatorial performance in a specially designed film set. The starting situation comprised a stage setting with lighting, video equipment in fixed positions, projection screens and fog machine. The key issue addressed was the translating curatorial practice into the staging of a concrete stage situation. How do the libertine artist-curators – originally conceived as a liberating phenomenon – interact in practice with the everyday reality of artistic and curatorial creative work? Is this vision still sustainable? What are the possibilities for this relational field between new forms of art criticism and exhibiting, and are new forms of subjectivity conceivable which are produced by a separating or counteractive relationship between both poles?
